Staithes Holiday Cottage: Places to Visit and Things to Do
If you like to relax at home, the cottage has all the comfort and facilities that you need for complete tranquility and relaxation. But take a little time to explore the local shops, cafes and bistros. Staithes has a good selection of seaside gift and toy shops: the Kessen Bowl ; Emporium; arts and crafts sales.
If you want nostalgia and maritime history, just roam the quaint cobbled streets and alleyways or pay a visit to the famous Captain Cook & Staithes Heritage Centre with its life-size street scene of Staithes life in 1745. This is a converted chapel in the village Captain Cook actually worked in and has 200 books of Cook’s life and journeys, Webbers’ original engravings, artefacts and pictures of Staithes. Find out about Staithes’ smuggling history or marvel at the ancient fishing “cobles” in the harbour. Once one of the major fishing ports of England, Staithes has a Mediterranean feel to it, with its higgledy piggledy white-washed cottages and views of red pantile roofs. You’ll find more local maritime history at nearby Whitby.
If you enjoy walking, you can explore the famous Cleveland Way with its breathtaking coastal and moorland scenery. This is real walking country in the National Park, and among the miles of coastal and countryside walks, you’ll easily find great paths, great views, picturesque and interesting villages and traditional pubs where you can stop for a break. Guided walks of discovery around “Real Staithes” are also available.
Eat and drink. There are also some great friendly cafes and bistros on the seafront and in the heart of the village. Try the Cleveland Corner Bistro, a speciality seafood restaurant, or the pretty tea room on the seafront opposite the beach. You can eat in or out and there are seats with a sea-view all along the sea wall. Or try Dotty’s Tea Room, next to the Dotty about Vintage shop. The To Dine For service will prepare and deliver superb food for your holiday. There are also several nearby take-away places which deliver to your door. Not to mention the three traditional dog-friendly pubs serving real ales and great food. The Cod and Lobster.

Art and artwork: Because of its spectacular scenery and pure light, Staithes has always attracted artists and an artists’ community is well established in the village. Have a look at some of their artistic offerings in the attractive art galleries in the old village. ‘Staithes is the place to go, there is no-where like it on all the coast for painting’ Thomas Barrett ARENSA, Staithes Group Artist 1848-1924″ Staithes Gallery.
Old Jack’s Boat Sticker trail: You can become a character from Old Jack’s Boat in a sticker trail in Staithes. The trail guides you through the old fishing village where the programme is filmed. Pick up a leaflet from a café or shop in Staithes and help Old Jack to mend his boat ‘The Rainbow.’
